Laos sits in central mainland Southeast Asia with no coastline to moderate its climate, which gives the country a more extreme annual temperature swing than its coastal neighbors. The basic rhythm is straightforward: a long dry season runs from roughly November through April, followed by a pronounced wet monsoon from May through October. What makes Laos's weather feel distinctive is the terrain. The country stretches from the mountainous north, where cool highland nights in December and January can require a jacket, to the flat Mekong plains of the south, where the heat in April builds to the kind that makes midday feel inadvisable without shade. The dry season divides loosely into two moods. The early months from November through February tend to be the most comfortable: temperatures sit in a manageable range, mornings can feel almost cool by Southeast Asian standards, and the skies stay clear for days at a stretch. By March and April, the dry season tips into what locals call the hot season. Highs push into the mid-thirties Celsius and the air takes on a dusty, haze-filled quality from agricultural burning further north. The Mekong runs low, some waterfalls reduce to a trickle, and afternoons become properly punishing. Then the monsoon arrives, usually in May, and Laos transforms. Rainfall picks up sharply and continues building through August, which tends to be the wettest month of the year. The landscape goes intensely green, rivers run high and fast, the air cools a few degrees from its April peak, and humidity settles in as a constant background presence. The rains don't generally fall all day. The more typical pattern is a heavy afternoon or evening downpour followed by clearer skies. Flooding is a real possibility along the Mekong and in lower-lying areas. October marks the transition back, with rainfall easing considerably and the rivers still running full. But the oppressive grey of peak monsoon starts to lift.

Best Time to Visit

Recommended timing for different travel styles.

Cultural
November through February is the window most travelers find rewarding. The cool, dry air makes walking between temples in Luang Prabang or wandering Vientiane's riverside boulevards pleasant. Crowds are manageable outside specific festival weeks, and the country's most important celebrations, including the That Luang Festival in November and Lao New Year (Pi Mai) in mid-April, fall at the shoulders of this period. Pi Mai in mid-April is worth timing a visit around despite the heat. Water-throwing festivities across the country make the temperature part of the spectacle.
Beach
Laos is landlocked, so travelers chasing beach relaxation need to recalibrate expectations. If slow days beside the Mekong, river swims, and the slow boat route from the Thai border to Luang Prabang count as relaxation, November through February delivers this in the best conditions. The rivers run clear, the air is dry, and the evenings are comfortable enough to sit outside.
Adventure
The sweet spot is October and November. The wet season has just ended, which means the landscape is still lush and green, waterfalls like Kuang Si near Luang Prabang are running at full strength, and the trails haven't dried out yet. Trekking in the northern highlands, around Phongsali, Nong Khiaw, or the Nam Ha area near Luang Namtha, rewards this timing well. Post-monsoon clarity tends to produce sharp mountain views before the dry-season haze sets in.
Budget
Budget travelers who don't mind rain will find the wet months from June through September offer a quieter, less crowded Laos. Guesthouses and tours often come in at lower rates during this period. Some of the country's most evocative scenery, the Bolaven Plateau's cascading waterfalls in the far south, the karst landscape around Vang Vieng, looks its most dramatic when the rains have done their work on the vegetation.

What to Pack

Essentials and seasonal recommendations for Laos.

Year-Round Essentials
compact rain layer or umbrella
even in the dry season, an isolated shower can arrive with little warning
High-SPF sunscreen
the angle of the sun this close to the equator means UV exposure is significant even on overcast wet-season days
reusable water bottle with a filter element
given the tap water situation across most of Laos and the environmental cost of single-use plastic
loose, breathable clothing in natural fibers like linen or cotton
handles the heat better than synthetics and dries faster after a monsoon downpour
clothing covering shoulders and knees
a practical necessity for temple visits in Luang Prabang and Vientiane, not an optional courtesy
Insect repellent
during and after the rainy season when mosquito activity peaks
small headlamp or torch
more useful than it sounds in a country where power outages still occur and guesthouse corridors sometimes go dark
dry season from November through April
Clothing
light layers for evenings in the north
Footwear
comfortable walking shoes that handle dust and uneven temple grounds
Accessories
wide-brimmed hat, cooling towel
Layering Tip
light fleece or long-sleeved shirt
wet season from May through October
Clothing
quick-drying clothes, light long-sleeved layer
Footwear
waterproof sandals or quick-drying shoes
Accessories
dry bags or waterproof pouches
Plug Type
Type A (two flat parallel pins, as used in the US and Japan) or Type C (two round pins, European-style), though Type B three-pin sockets appear in some larger hotels
Voltage
230 volts at 50Hz
Adapter Note
Travelers from North America will need a voltage converter for any device not rated for 220-240V, the voltage difference can damage equipment, so checking the label before plugging in is worth the three seconds it takes.
Skip These Items
heavy denim jeans, which dry slowly and feel oppressive in tropical humidity regardless of the season formal business attire, which is rarely needed anywhere outside Vientiane's government quarter multiple pairs of bulky footwear when one pair of versatile walking sandals and one pair of covered shoes covers nearly every situation the country presents high-end waterproof hiking boots for casual trekking, where lighter trail shoes or sturdy sandals are more practical body powder in non-resealable containers, which becomes a mess the first time a bag encounters a wet-season afternoon
